Located in Normal, Illinois, Illinois State University is an excellent option for international students who wish to study abroad in the United States. This university is known for its excellent academic reputation and for being the first public university in the state of Illinois.  Illinois State University is a great place for international students to learn and grow while studying abroad in the United States.

Like most United States schools, the tuition at ISU can be expensive for international students. However, that should not deter you from applying if you want to attend Illinois State University. There are many job opportunities in Chicago, and about 15.4% of the Chicago population holds a graduate degree.  Employers tend to hire locally, so this is a great thing for students who wish to stay in the Midwest/Chicago area post-graduation. Asian students make up about 3% of the population at ISU.

Chicago, Illinois has a bustling and diverse job economy. Chicago is projected for a 25.7% future job growth, which is right in line with the national average. While the job economy is diverse, about 10.3% of the population works in professional, scientific, and technical services, which can be appealing for those students pursuing STEM degrees. Some fast-growing and large companies in Chicago include Google, Groupon, and McDonalds. Last year, Chicago sponsored over 11,000 work visas.

Application Requirements

Like all United States colleges and higher education programs, Illinois State University has an application(s) that international students need to complete in order to be considered for acceptance. There are a number of different requirements that need to be fulfilled. These include:

  • A completed ISU application;
  • Official, certified transcripts from all secondary school and all official results from any leaving certificates or university entrance exams you have taken. If the materials are not in English, you will need to provide a certified, English translation of them. The average undergraduate GPA ranges from 3.07-3.83.
  • English proficiency scores. For the TOEFL, you must meet the following minimums: 79iBT or 550 pBT. The minimum IELTS score is 6.5. Please note that the requirements may vary by program and degree.
  • The average ACT score is between a 21-26 The average SAT composite range is 1020-1200.
  • If you are entering a program that requires a GRE, please check with that program to see the average and minimum required score as they all vary.

Illinois State University does not say whether they require letters of recommendation, a personal statement, or essays. That likely depends on the school or program that you are applying to. Please double check with that school or program to see if it is required of you, and to see if any other information is needed.
