Nomad Credit looks at the best universities in the U.S. for international students. This series of blogs will feature lists of top 10 universities of different criteria. This week we profile the Top 10 Universities of the U.S. for Food.
Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine takes the number one spot on the list. Publications such as Restaurants and Institutions Magazine, The Princeton Review, and HerCampus.com have constantly praised Bowdoin for its commitment to providing all students with the best culinary options. It’s commitment to sustainability is what puts it above others, having its own “in-house meat shop” and its own on-campus organic garden, allowing it to feed students healthy and delicious food.
Virginia Tech has about a dozen different eateries placed right on campus. This includes traditional dining halls, food courts with well-known chains, and, what separates it from most of its competitors, a couple of food trucks that dock different places on campus for students to get some variety in their meals. It also has a focus on sustainability, see in the Farms and Fields Project serving up “exclusively local, sustainable, and organic dishes”.
UCLA makes its way onto another one of our top 10 universities in the U.S. list. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s a top ranked public school and sits at the top of the list as having the best weather out of all universities. But that’s not why it’s on this list. UCLA has 4 “residential restaurants” located right in the dormitories on campus for easy access. Combine that with their very own on-campus food delivery service and late-night cafes, UCLA slides its way into the top 3. You don’t need an education consultant to tell you why UCLA is a top tier school.
There are 28 dining options on the Madison University campus, the most on this list of top universities in the US. It’s very clear that students have no problem finding a place to eat on campus. The university has an “authentic Tandoori oven” in one of its dining halls in addition to the Fueled Food Truck which brings healthy, locally-sourced Asian fusion cuisine to campus. The amount of chains on campus also sets it apart, featuring Chick-Fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, and Subway.
Cornell University was founded in 1865, and given its Ivy League status, it’s held to a high academic standard. But they make sure their students are well fed as well. Thirty different eateries line the campus, giving students plenty of options to chow down. From dining halls to food courts to dairy bars, no one goes hungry. The dining halls also have an “All you care to eat” mantra, so students are encouraged to eat until they’re full. As an Ivy though, things don’t necessarily com cheap, so get those education loans beforehand so you’re not constantly thinking about money while you’re enjoying your meals.
Quality and quantity is needed to be put on a list of top universities in the US for food, but location helps put it on the top 10 list. With a 169-acre campus, the dining establishments hit every end of campus. The Village, the DUC, and the Bear’s den hit the north, central, and south ends of campus, respectively, offering a plethora of restaurants and authentic international cuisine.

Vanderbilt University is a top-ranking university in the United States centered in Nashville, Tennessee known as Music City, USA, has a population of over 1.8 million, making it the largest in the state. What makes Vanderbilt unique is that they cater to college students’ unusual eating times, making a quarter of their eating establishments 24 hour marketplaces with ready-to-eat food a plenty. Additionally, the have a vegetarian café on campus ensuring all students’ dietary restrictions are met.
Northwestern finds its way onto our list. Six dining halls cover each end of the university, giving students plenty of options to have a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As an added bonus, all the dining halls are tray free, which allows students to take as much as they want. And for the students who don’t have time during their busy day schedules, a couple of dining halls offer late night option in addition to a couple of cafes on campus that are open until 3am. Aside from its food, Northwestern has a rigorous graduate school for those wishing to obtain their MS in the US.
It’s not all about massive food courts or numerous amounts of dining halls as this addition to our list proves. Located in Lewiston, Maine, Bates college has an enrollment of less than 2000. The most popular food destination on their campus is the Commons. Proving big things come in small packages, the cafeteria has omelet station and waffle bar all week long along with several culinary options for lunch and dinner.
Amherst heads up the back of our list of top 10 universities in the U.S. for food. A large, public university, it’s easy to discount the college’s ability to serve consistently tasty and healthy food. The university has 18 eateries and cafes outside of its 4 traditional dining halls, a bakery, 2 food trucks, and a delivery service. Amherst does its part for the community, sourcing fruits, veggies, and seafood from local vendors in the New England area.
