For students outside of the US, studying in a good US school is often just a dream. This is especially true for those in developing countries, where high quality education is not as accessible. However, it doesn’t have to be, with the myriad of resources and assistance now available. For instance, scholarships can help address financial constraints, one of the top barriers impacting educational opportunities.
For foreign students, it is especially important to plan out all your finances before embarking on your educational journey. Here on Nomad Credit we shared how scholarship applications can be tedious, but that shouldn’t stop you. There are many scholarships available to suit your needs and capabilities. Here are some of them to check out.
Foreign Fulbright Student Program
Funded by the US Government, the Fulbright Program is aimed at students who want to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree. It awards full scholarships and grants to cover tuition, textbooks, daily living allowances, health insurance, and even airfare. Specialized workshops also take place with themes ranging from laboratory and marketing to entrepreneurship and research. It’s highly prestigious, and former awardees such as Charles Coleman have credited the program as the key to breaking down cultural barriers both abroad and at home.
William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program
As well as scholarships, Maryville University underlines how federal aid can help with tuition costs. This is because there are a variety of opportunities available, with a clear process that begins with filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). One such example is the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. More commonly known as “Direct Loans,” this program allows students’ loan funds to be electronically transmitted from the U.S. Treasury to the international school’s designated bank. Payment will depend on what type of loan you get (subsidized or unsubsidized). However, not all schools participate in Direct Loans, so be sure to check if your university is included or not.
BrokerFish International Student Scholarship
This annual scholarship contest is hosted by insurance technology company BrokerFish. Part of their aim is to help students realize how education can change the world. To qualify for the BrokerFish International Student Scholarship, you must be a full-time student pursuing a degree in any of their accredited institutions. You will also need to complete an essay.
AAUW International Fellowships in USA for Women
Formerly known as the American Association of University Women, the AAUW aims to provide full-time study or research in the United States to non-US citizen women. Half Moon Bay Review highlights that their attention focuses on vision and motivation instead of just good grades. Preferably, applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to helping inspire women and girls through civic, community, or professional work.
East-West Center Scholarships and Fellowships
With the objective of cultivating a community of international students, East-West Center program awardees must be devoted to promoting better relations and understanding among Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. Various scholarships and fellowships are available — from masters and doctoral degrees, to other opportunities such as a cultural exchange with host families.
