Located in sunny Tampa Bay, Florida, the University of South Florida is an excellent option for international students looking to study abroad in the United States. Comprised of over fourteen different colleges, the University of South Florida has options for nearly every major and every career goal. USF is extremely diverse, with 128 countries being represented and a whopping 10% overall of the student population made up of international students. That, combined with a stunning, waterfront campus makes USF an extremely appealing option for international students.
Like most United States Schools, the tuition at the University of South Florida can be expensive for international students. However, that should not deter you from applying if you want to attend USF. Employers tend to hire locally, so this is a great thing for students who wish to stay in the Tampa area post-graduation. Asian students make up about 7% of the population at USF.

Tampa Bay is currently the top Florida metropolitan area in job openings (beating out Miami) and ranks second in jobs added in the state over the past year. However, most importantly, it ranks first in STEM job in demand with almost 13,500. Last year, companies in Tampa sponsored almost 4,000 work visas. The main industries in Tampa include avionics, defense, and marine electronics; business and information services; financial services; and manufacturing.

Like all United States colleges and higher education programs, USF has an application(s) that international students need to complete in order to be considered for acceptance. There are a number of different requirements that need to be fulfilled. These include:
- Your official transcripts from any secondary school you may have attended. If the transcripts are not in English, you will need to get a certified translation of them.
- The average GPA of incoming freshman was 3.89
- ACT/SAT scores. The average ACT was 24-28, and the average SAT math was 540-630, critical reading 530-620, and writing 510-600.
- There is no minimum TOEFL/IELTS score. You will need to submit a score, and USF will contact you further with your placement and let you know if you need to take an additional course(s) to improve your English proficiency.
- The average and/or minimum GRE varies by program. For Computer Science, there is a minimum of 161 on the quantitative portion and a minimum of 150 on the verbal portion.
USF does not say whether they require letters of recommendation, a personal statement, or essays. That likely depends on the school or program that you are applying to. Please double check with that school or program to see if it is required of you, and to see if any other information is needed.
