Many international students come to the United States to pursue an MS in engineering. Engineering is a broad field of study and industry, and one of the more popular areas of focus in engineering is mechanical engineering. Previously, we have detailed the top US firms that hire international student aerospace engineers, and the top US firms that hire international student engineers in the overall industry.
Generally, mechanical engineers design machines, such as energy producing machines like electric generators, and even design machines inside of buildings, like elevators. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, mechanical engineers “design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal sensors and devices, including tools, engines, and machines”.
Finding and landing a job in the mechanical engineer industry may prove to be difficult for international students on an F1 or J1 visa. Not only are jobs in the engineering industry competitive, but international students also have the additional step of finding a company to sponsor an H1B visa so that they can work legally in the United States.
However, just because international students may have an additional steps to overcome in finding a mechanical engineering job does not mean that it is impossible. With hard work, dedication, a strong work ethic and good academic performance, you can make yourself stand out from the competition and be a strong candidate for a company seeking a mechanical engineer.
